Tandem trailers are fundamentally more stable than single-axle trailers at highway speeds. The dual-axle footprint resists trailer sway (the dangerous side-to-side oscillation that can cause accidents). This is especially important when towing in strong crosswinds or passing large trucks.

Turning radius is larger on tandem trailers — they track wider through corners and need more space in tight areas. Practice reversing in an empty car park before loading up for the first time.
